| This is a picture of a map titled, "Die deutschen Siedlungen auf der Halbinsel Krim", by Dr. K. Stumpp. Krim is Crimea. Many, probably most, of the settlements in Crimea were German. Among them we find Bohemian and other settlements. On the original map, 1 inch is about 15 kilometers. On that map the distance between Simferopol and Bohemka, which is just right of center, far north on this map, is 6 3/4 inches or 101 km. 101 km = about 63 miles. After a settlement name you may see one of three words in parens ( ). Basically, e = evangelisch = evangelistic; k = katholisch - catholic; and m = mennoniten = mennonite. Isadore Vincent Lisko is believed to have been born in Simferopol on 15 October 1905. Whether the Lisko or Liska family lived in Simferopol or one of the surrounding settlements is not clear. It is unlikely that he was born in a hospital of any sort. We know from other information, that Isadore's grandmother, Anna Kolar, mother of Mary Fisher, gave Bogenko, Tourien as her residence of departure on traveling to America in 1907. Tourien is Crimea and Bogenko, could be Bohemka or another Bohemian settlement there, perhaps very close to Simferopol and not listed on this map. Spelling is not important since the scribe, likely Russian based on the port of departure, wrote what he heard. 60 miles seems like a long distance between home and a birth location for this time. More than likely, Isadore was either born in Bohemka and the baptism record, maybe the baptism too, was in Simferopol, or, Isadore and his parents lived in Simferopol and was actually born there. The church record would be in Simferopol. In any case, the Lisko family probably lived somewhere on this map while in Crimea. Anton Lisko & Mary Fisher and their infant, Isadore Vincent Lisko, arrived in America on December 14, 1905 (Mary and Isadore) and December 21, 1905 (Anton), with Isadore being barely two months old! |
