He married MARY MARTHA GARSON 30 May 1908 in Strum, Wisconsin, daughter of NILS GARSJØEN and JULIANNE CLARA FRODALEN. She was born 02 May 1884 in Town of Unity, Strum, Wisconsin, and died 19 Aug 1951 in Strum, Wisconsin where she and Helfred are buried in the Roy Matson plat.
Helfred purchased on August 1, 1910, in Pierre, South Dakota area, the southeast quarter of section thirty one in Township seven north of Range 25 east of the Black Hills Meridian, S.D., containing 160 acres. Per daughter, Mariann, family moved off the Berg farm and into Eleva around 1943 and Mariann's mom had her first stroke in same year. They moved back to the farm to be cared for about 1947. Mariann's mother died in 1951 and father in 1954. He also had stroke later in life.
