| Both pictures are the same. The second from the top shows the picture as it appeared in an article in the Tri-County News sometime after 1979 and maybe as recent as 1998. The Strum baseball players are all well known to many. Strum has a long history of baseball. Notice the Beef River "Brick" Church in the background. This picture was taken on Elm Street just east of Main Street, Strum. I have been told that this picture is 1932. The news article suggests it is approximately 1928. Roy Matson was born in 1909 and Norval in 1911. So, 1928 is probably the earliest possible year and 1932 makes sense. These pictures provided compliments of Dan Bergerson who earlier received them from Ardyth "Ardy" [Thompson] Robertson, both former residents of Strum. Their fathers are in this picture: Odell Bergerson and Orville Thompson. My (Fred Matson) father, Roy Matson is also in this picture and my father's brother, Norval Matson, and their Uncle, Genhard Strand, husband of Ruth Garson Strand. The original picture is in the book, "A History of Strum and the Town of Unity", by Roy Matson, under, you guessed it, Baseball!. This book and this picture and account are also on line on this WEB site HERE. Posted by Fred Matson 18 June 2008, updated 5 Sep 2010 |
