BAPTISM: FHL microfilm 1693967: b.A6: 1878-1896: Item 3: Page 11: No. 44: Hoff church: Born, 31 Jul 1879: Baptized, 24 Aug: Child's full name, HELFRID: Parents, Humand Syver Madsen og Helene Olsdatr: Residence, Sjerstadeje: Father born 1843: Mother born 1843 (NOTE, the years didn't seem that important): Sponsors, Matea Madsdtr Stabueje (same as Staboeie) (NOTE, this could be another sister of Syver's), Helga Johannesdtr Ingstad (not sure of this spelling), Ole Olsen Fagerland, Johan Svendsen Sejerstad, og Peder Andersen Fastad. NOTE: When it comes to spelling, remember that Norway didn't have a written dictionary until about the turn of the century and it was written down as it sounded to the scribe. Also, the "d"s and "t"s were interchangeable, the "j"s and "i"s were interchangable and numerous other letters were interchangeable, hence the differences in spellings. The same way with years. Usually if you can get within a range of two or three years (sometimes five, which I have seen) you are pretty close. Thank You Leroy Madson Note: I also reviewed these records. Helfred's name is clearly written as HELFRID in the Parish Record. But, as Mr. Madson suggests, not to worry. Names were recorded as heard. Also, I am not convinced that Syver and Hellene would have recognized the difference in spelling. I am not sure they could read or write. As you look through this information, notice all the clues to locating Syver's and Hellene's siblings. Notice all the different farm names.
