July 22, 2001 and updated January 14, 2006:

The following July 16, 2001 research re: Ole Ellefsen and family is no longer relevant to the Matson-Garson research.  But, I have decided to retain the information.  Read for enjoyment.  I hope this helps you understand how easily it is to draw incorrect conclusions about geneology research data. Oddly enough, I have only recently (January 2006) been contacted by a person who IS a descendant of Ole Ellefsen & Syverine Marie Jensdr. She found this account through an Internet search.

The follow research does not lead to my family but is believed to be accurate research for the Ole Ellefsen family:

July 16, 2001:

On this day, July 16, 2006, I was early in my family research and was In the process of waiting for microfilms from the local LDS history center that may pin point Syver (Matson)'s birth. While waiting, I decided to pursue Helene (Syver's wife)'s birth through the Internet and in Hof parish microfilm. Syver was believed to have been born in Vestre Toten, a microfilm I had on order.

My account of this on July 16, 2001 continues. I had found the Ole Ellefsen family through the LDS WEB site
www.familysearch.org and I pursuing that avenue:

"If I have the correct family, I have found lots of information and parish records for Helene.  If I have the correct family, Helene, Syver Johannes Madsen's wife, is the daughter of  Ole Ellefsen and Syverine Marie Jensdr.  If I have the correct family, and the correct Helene, I have located four siblings:  Lene Olsen, Hagen Olsen, Johannes Olsen, and Jens Olsen. If I have the correct family, always the question.

This Helene, daughter of Ole Ellefsen and Syverine Marie Jensdr, was born in 1844 at Helgestadeie, Toten, Oppland, Norway, and christened on January 5, 1845.  The Hof Parish micro filmed records show her christening name as Elene Marie and that she was born on April 18, 1844.  Indications are that the family has lived in Ostre Toten or Toten since at least 1836, and the christening of their first born, Lene.

This Ole Ellefsen and this Syverine Marie Jensdr were married on April 6, 1836.  Their other children were born or christened as follows:  Lene Olson (c. August 14, 1836, Ostre Toten, Oppland); Hagen Olsen (b. 1838 at Skramstadytten, Toten, Oppland); Johannes Olsen (b. 1846 at Reinsbyeie, Toten, Oppland); and Jens Olsen (c. October 20, 1850, Helgestadeie, Toten, Oppland).

I have Lene married to Mathias Andersen on April 6, 1852 in Vestre Toten, Oppland, Norway; I have Johan Olsen (Johannes) married to Olina Olsdr on January 7, 1868 in Ostre Toten, Oppland, Norway; and, I have Jens Olsen married to Lina Johannesdr on October 18, 1872 in Ostre Toten, Oppland, Norway.

Note: As a separate search, which turns out not to be connected to the Ellefsen family, I have the marriage of my Helene Olsdr and Syver Johannes Madsen on June 3, 1870 in Ostre Toten, Oppland, Norway. But my question at the time was, is this Ole Ellefsen & Syverine Marie Jensdr.'s Helene's marriage?

I have Ole Ellefsen, Syverine Marie Jensdatter, his wife, and three children, Helene, Johannes, and Jens located in the 1865 Census, at Lokkebakken domicile or farm in Ostre Toten.  That record shows that Marie, was born in 1812, in Hurdalen.  (At the time, this got my attention because the other side of my family, the Garson side, is from Hurdalen). A search for Syverine Marie Jensdatter in Akershus County, results in one person, Syverine Marie Jensen, born in about 1811, in Hurdal.

If I have the correct and same Helene at birth, christening, and marriage, and in the Census, then Ole Ellefsen and Syverine Marie Jensdatter are grandparents of Helfred Matson, my Dad's father, and my grandfather.

I am certain that I have the correct Helene at marriage and to Syver Madsen.  But, do I have the correct Helene at birth and christening with Ole Ellefsen & Syverine Marie Jensdatter?  More research will tell.  The presence of some familiar familiy names would improve my confidence.

Meanwhile, I hope soon to view Syver's birth and/or christening in parish records for Kolbu Parish, Vestre Toten."

End of the account. I since learned, only a week later, that I was on the wrong track with Ole Ellefsen & Syverine Marie Jensdatter being the parents of my Helene. My Helene's parents are Ole Hansen & Ragnhild Juulsdatter. My Helene, my great grandmother, was also born in Hof Parish, however.
