He was a farmer in the Strum area for 6 years and the Osseo area for 17 years. he was the chairman of the Town of Sumner before becoming Trempealeau County Highway Commissioner. he held this post for 16 years until his accident. he was also a member of the Osseo, Wisconsin Masonic Lodge, Zorah Shrine of Eau Claire and the American Legion post of Whitehall, the Trempeauleau County county seat.
